18th ANNUAL STRING COMPETITION

With a great big crescendo, the String Competition came and went. It was a successful event on April 1, 2007 with seventy-four students registered to compete. Beginner students as well as more seasoned students worked months prior with their teachers for a chance to win trophies and show the judges what they've learned.

Jonas Gibson of Nederland, won the Sandra Mason Scholarship Overall Young Performer Award. He has been a student of Aggie's Violin Studio for six years. Jonathan McCowan of Beaumont won the Sandra Mason Scholarship Overall Performer Award. He has played the Cello for six years and currently studies privately with Thomas Schroeder. With this prestigious award comes a $200.00 music scholarship. Sandra's son Ryan was in attendance to present these two awards.

The weather kept 12 students from joining us that day, and one accompanist was 25 minutes late due to bad weather, but still the music played on despite our situation.

I would especially like to thank Elizabether Miller, Co-Chair, Canda Kessler, Frances Bethea, Karen Burkhardt and Kara Wied for their supportive roles in making another year successful.

The area's string teachers are appreciative of the League in hosting the annual String Competition. Years ago they attempted to pull together a similar event and said they are grateful for the work we do for area string students.
