2005 SYMPHONY LEAGUE STRING COMPETITION

On Saturday, March 5, 2005, the Annual Symphony League String Competition went off with a bang. With nearly 100 students enrolled, 40 volunteers and 8 teachers, the day was a huge success and a great reflection of what the Symphony League is really all about—beautiful music. This event truly means so much to all of the students who are given the opportunity to perform in front of amazing judges and accompanists provided by the Symphony League to continue to encourage the love of music.

The talent was outstanding! This year’s winners were Daniel Gibson and Blythe Valencia, both students of Aggie In. Daniel Gibson won the outstanding young performer award and Blythe Valencia won the outstanding overall award. Both received scholarships in honor of Sandra Mason. Sandra Mason’s son and mother presented the awards along with inspirational words from her son that brought tears to all of our eyes, recalling Sandra’s love of music and the Symphony League.

I could not have done this job without my amazing Co-Chair, Kara Wied whom I know will do an terrific job next year. A special thanks goes out to our President, Barbara Brookner and President-Elect, Frances Bethea who were there every step of the way.

Many thanks also goes out to my Monitor Chairman, Karen Burkhardt who replaced a missing Judge with such grace. She did a great job! Past Chairman, Nancy Newton and her husband, Frank Newton deserve recognition for graciously donated name tags for all entrants and volunteers.

Thank you to Mary Kirby, my Grouping and Presentation Chairman whose past experience gave us a foundation for a wonderful presentation. A special thanks goes out to Cindy Dishman, the Youth Guild Chairman and all the Youth Guild Members who made the day move so smoothly.

Melissa Cornwell, my Hospitality Chairman did an excellent job ! She was a gracious hostess to all the volunteers and judges.

Thank you to Lamar University and Dr. Babin for hosting the event. I cannot forget to recognize Galyn Wixon for stepping in at a moments notice to judge the competition.

Many thanks to Becky Mason, President of SOSET for being the MC of the event .

My heart felt appreciation goes out to all the other countless volunteers who made this event so wonderful. Thank you for the opportunity to chair this event. It was truly a wonderful experience.
