FROM THE PRESIDENT
ELECT
Where does the time go? When asked to be President
Elect of the Symphony League of Beaumont, I was so honored and May
2005 seemed so far away. Now suddenly it’s Spring. The grass is
greener; the sun is brighter; gardens are in bloom and the time
has come to begin the new Symphony League year. It’s time to turn
in reports and notebooks. It’s time for the membership packets to
be prepared. It’s time to reserve the Phelan Mansion for the Butterfly
Brunch…….
Most of all, it’s time to say thank you to each
one of you whose efforts in the past make exciting plans for the
future possible. Flowers that appear seemingly overnight are the
result of the hard work that has gone before, of strong roots, thoughtful
planting, maintenance, a little luck and many blessing. So too it
is with the Symphony League.
Thank you President Barbara Brookner. What a
beautiful garden you are entrusting to my care. Your presidency
was characterized by consummate professionalism, creativity, compassion,
class, and great chicken salad.
The League’s roots are deep and strong due to
a tradition of quality programs and the success of fund raising
projects. Tanya Henderson and her committee filled the debutante
season with memorable magic. Not only was it the stuff little girls
dreams are made of but it also contributed greatly to the League’s
strong financial position. We are proud of the traditions Tanya
upheld and enhanced so beautifully. Speaking of dreams, once again
the Symphony League Ball was the party of the year ----a genie,
silken tents, bejeweled camels, a great band, beautiful Symphony
Belles and all that lovely money raised by Ann Clary Old and her
ball committee. The Arabian Nights Ball was a dream that only got
better the next morning with the final accounting of the record
setting profits.
Seeds for the future were planted through educational
programs. Canda Kessler and her Youth Concerts Committee and Chelsea
Brandimarte and her String Competition Committee produced highly
successful events that helped to insure symphonic music will continue
to be important to future generations.
It has been said that “No one can whistle a
symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it.” The strength and success
of the Symphony League is due to the collective efforts of our members.
You have given unselfishly of your time, talent and treasure. From
January 1, 2000, through February 10, 2005, the Symphony League
of Beaumont contributed $467,500 to the Symphony of Southeast Texas.
I am inspired by and grateful for the countless hours our members
give from the precious commodity of their lives.
Exciting times, hard work and rewarding experiences
lie ahead. A committee chaired by Danita Fierce will soon make a
recommendation for a special event made possible by the financial
successes of the past year. The 2007 TASO conference will bring
volunteers from all over Texas to see how we do things here. For
the 2005-2006 season, the SOSET has planned a musical Global Tour
from East to West which will take us to familiar places and offer
new adventures.
With your help our garden will continue to flourish
and enrich all Southeast Texas.
