PRESIDENT'S NOTES

It’s hard to believe that another Symphony League year is nearing its end. This past year has been one of excitement, activity and many successes. New friends have been made, dear friends have been lost and the music plays on.

The Symphony Ball held on February 5 was a magical transformation into the world of Arabian Nights. Not only did Chairman Ann Clary Old and her amazing committee manage to throw a fabulous party, the Ball was a huge financial success. The monies made will enable the Symphony League to continue our mission of supporting the Symphony of Southeast Texas and providing musical education and support to the community.

On March 5, the Youth String Competition was held. Many special thanks go to Chairman Chelsea Brandimarte for putting her heart and soul into making this year’s Competition a day to be remembered by all who participated. The Sandra Hawthorne Mason Memorial Scholarships were presented to the Best Young Performer and the Best Performer by Mrs. Joy Hawthorne, Sandra’s mother. Michael Mason, Sandra’s son, spoke briefly and with great eloquence to the participants. If you ever have an opportunity to help with the String Competition, please do so. It is a wonderful and meaningful project.

In the background, while all the League projects were whirling around, Frances Bethea chaired a committee to review our bylaws and policies. Thanks to Frances and her committee for the numerous hours spent in developing proposed revisions to our bylaws and policies which more clearly represent our current League activities. The proposed bylaws will be voted on at the annual meeting on May 4, so I hope you will plan on being there.

A very special thanks goes to Jan Lamb for always being there when I needed advice or help, which was often.

As we exit our fiscal year, the League remains fiscally sound. Danita Fierce, who will be next year’s Treasurer, has chaired a committee to study the League’s current funding structure. Recommendations as to how to allocate the funds we have accumulated will be made to the Board at the April meeting and announced at the Annual meeting in May.

I would like to express my appreciation to each and every member of the Board and the League for your help, support and encouragement during the past year. Each one of you has made my “job” as President easy and fun. You are an awesome group of women with whom I’m very proud to be associated. Thank you for letting me be your President.
