PRESIDENT'S NOTES

The Symphony League of Beaumont has been up and running at full speed since our Membership Coffee in August. So much has already been accomplished thanks to our tireless and energetic volunteers, and it’s just the end of October!

If you’ve been at any Symphony League or Symphony event, you’ve surely seen Mary Jane Nogay, League Historian, and Jenny Shuffield, League Publicity, taking pictures for our newsletter, scrapbook and newspapers. These ladies’ motto should be “Have digital camera Will travel.”

Patricia Yeates and our Symphony Relations committees have been working with the Symphony staff to sell program ads, season tickets, and help with the “Seats in Seats” campaign. Thanks to Becky Marino and Linda Pate who worked diligently in the summer helping in these efforts. Many thanks and many kudos to Sue Terrill Golias, our orchestra hospitality chairman, who arranged a delicious Italian meal for our orchestra during rehearsal prior to the first concert. Thanks also to the Olive Garden who donated the food for this group of talented musicians.

The John Gray Library was the setting for the Past Presidents’ Tea, where our lovely Debutantes and Junior Escorts were introduced. Tanya Henderson, Deb Chairman, and Elizabeth Phelan, Junior Escort Chairman, were justifiably proud of these young ladies and gentlemen. Sherry Goth, immediate past president of the League, planned and executed an impeccable event from the breathtaking floral arrangements to the musical accompaniment of Mignon Winger. A special afternoon was followed by a fun evening for our Symphony Belles and Junior Escorts at the Tea Dance held in their honor at the Dixie Dance Hall. Brenda McMakin, Belle Chairman, and Elizabeth Phelan hosted over 250 middle school young people. A good time was had by all.

The “ivories” were smoking at the first concert of the Symphony season thanks to the awesome talent of Philippe Bianconi, guest pianist. The first concert of all Tchaikovsky compositions was a blazing opener to what promises to be a truly hot season. Helene Nichols secured box office crews and Cindy Dishman provided a great group of Youth Guild members who ushered symphony guests with confidence. Our 2004 Symphony League Debutantes were introduced at the concert after being treated to a gourmet feast at the beautiful home of Lew and Diane Sheffler. The meal was prepared by Judy Halleman and will surely be remembered as a highlight of the Deb Season.

Certainly the best of our events was saved for last. On Saturday night, October 23, the Beaumont Country Club was transformed into a formal garden party for the 43rd Annual Debutante Ball. Our Debs were gorgeous and glowing as they were presented to a room full of proud parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and others who love these young ladies. Their escorts were handsome and dignified. The ever gracious and gorgeous Tanya Henderson, with the help of Ball Chairman, Carol Smith, surely succeeded in making many dreams come true at the Ball. It was a wonderful night.

The ending of a spectacular Debutante season was the Butterfly Brunch held under the sprawling oaks at Cindy Dishman’s beautiful home. The Debutantes and their Moms were raving about the Ball and what a good time everyone had. The only complaints were due to feet that were sore from dancing the night away at the Ball. Consideration may be given to changing the Butterfly Brunch to a Butterfly Flip-Flop Brunch.

With all that has been happening, it’s hard to believe that there’s much more excitement on the horizon. Plan to attend the next Symphony concert on November 20, where you’ll “feel the earth rumble” as guest artist, percussionist Ben Toth, leads us on a musical journey. Plans are well underway for the Symphony Ball under the direction of Ann Clary Old, so mark your calendars for February 5 when you’ll be swept away into the magic of the Arabian Nights.

There are so many opportunities available for you to get involved with the Symphony League. If you’re not yet involved, “get connected” at our membership link, or contact one of our Board members.

Ignite your life ……….

With the music of the Symphony.
